Our God Is Full of Surprises
God has interesting ways of showing how he works in your life.. I never expected to be a pastor. I fully believed I was to be a medical doctor. After an invitation to share one third of a message one Sunday at my home church (First UMC of Palmyra PA), something significant happened. The church was alive with the presence of God, people were filled with the Spirit, and I was a mess. I had my plans, but God had his purposes (Proverbs 16:9). Surprise change of plans #1.
After six months of turmoil I changed my major from pre-med to seek a teaching degree in biology I married my college sweetheart, Deb, and headed to seminary. We served several churches in Ohio and Pennsylvania and grew into a family with three boys and a dog. (I always have a dog!)
One of my churches felt I should be sharing my preaching with other churches and arranged an associate pastor so I could be free to do so. Eventually, I felt called to full time evangelism work. With little income and a busy preaching schedule I applied for a teaching job as a biology teacher. I never thought my teaching degree was going to be needed, but God knew I would need it 18 years after graduation. Surprise change of plans #2.
As a family we chose to drive 30 minutes each week to worship at Reeders Church while I was doing evangelism work. Little did I expect, after a pastorate of 14 years in another church that God would bring me back to Reeders as the pastor, but he did. My appointment as pastor to Reeders came at a time in the congregation's life when they could use a familiar face. Surprise change of plans #3.
Deb and I have never looked back and have had no need to. God has always provided for us, led us in new and somewhat nerve-wracking ways, and has always, always been faithful to us. We look forward to the hope we have in him, and know he will finish the work he has begun in us, and through us. God is good...all the time.
